The use of natural products increases with age, the survey found, that 82% of those aged 55 and older were most likely to use natural products, followed by 81% of 45-54 year olds, 78% of those 35-44 and 77% of those 18-34. Higher household income and education is also an indicator of natural product usage: those with household income of $75,000 or more are more likely to use natural products for health benefits than households with incomes of $35,000 or less; those with a H.S. diploma or less are less likely than those with some college education and those with a college degree or higher to have used natural products in the past year for health benefits.

Americans were more inclined to use a natural products if they received a recommendation from their doctor or pharmacist and if there was clinical proof of effectiveness. One in four believes natural remedies are often just as effective as over-the-counter and/or prescription medicines, and nearly three in ten U.S. adults believe that natural products are safer than over-the-counter and/or prescription medications because they are “drug-free.”
